· Rapid Multiplication of Orchids through Tissue Culture and Development of Women Entrepreneurship

 

 


Objectives :

To propagate thousands of Orchids through Tissue culture and development of women entrepreneurship
To transfer skills among 5 women groups each consisting of 20 members
To initiate alternative source of income of the beneficiaries

Output :

Produced 50,000 plantlets through micropropagation technology
Completed shade house
Hardened orchid plantlets to the rural women
Trained women groups
Increased the beneficiaries income

· Development of Sustainable Conservation and Management of Medicinal Plants

 

 


Objectives :

To document the indigenous and traditional knowledge specifically related to the use of backyard home gardens both as a source of raw material and primary health care.
To develop lists of Critically Threatened local Medicinal Plants in the villages and raise awareness among the local communities.
To develop a cultivation manual based on experience and documentation of local medicinal plants.
To motivate and extend the cultivation of medicinal plants in backyard home gardens to the rural communities for their new source of income.
To influence national policy on medicinal plants conservation based on the success of this project.

Output :

10 Medicinal Plants were established at Laxmipur by the rural women.
Conducted a survey report on Traditional and Industrial use and Market Scenario of Medicinal Plant in Bangladesh
According to that survey govt. had taken initiative regarding Medicinal Plants.

· Collection, Evaluation, Improvement and Propagation of Native Orchids through Tissue Culture

 

 


Objectives :

Collection and characterization of native orchids
To create variability and develop new varieties for cut flower
To sharpen the present protocol of mass propagation through tissue culture
To develop the indigenous technology in order to transfer the orchid plantlets from in vitro condition to ex situ in field condition
To transfer the technical know how to the entrepreneur, government and non government organization

Output :

Collected different species of native orchids for Ex-situ conservation
Handed over these species to horticulture division BARI
Developed tissue culture protocol for the propagation of native species
Developed hardening system of tissue grown plantlets
Transferred technology to the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute- BARI
Disseminated technology to business enterprises for cultivation of orchids

· A Survey Report on Traditional and Industrial Use and Market Scenario of Medicinal Plant in Bangladesh

 

 


Overall Objectives :

The main objective of this research is to document the traditional knowledge and market scenario of Medicinal Plant in Bangladesh

Specific Objectives :

Document the traditional use of medicinal plant by villagers
Document the industrial use of medicinal plant by the industries
Document the market scenario of medicinal plant

Output :

The findings were that the medicinal plants market is Taka 6.4 billion, where most of the plants are imported (processed raw materials) from neighboring countries. The findings were disclosed in a press conference held by DEBTEC
The Government of Bangladesh has taken note of this initiative and Govt. of Bangladesh has declared the theme for the National Tree Plantation fair, for the next 3 consecutive years (2002-2005), as the medicinal plants year.
By the intervention of DEBTEC a medicinal plants garden 'Banasray' was established at the Prime Ministers' Office. This model is being copied in different countries including President House in India .
DEBTEC has produced a folk drama titled "Medicinal Plants for Life", to aware the grass root people, about the importance of medicinal plants.

· Rapid Production of diseases free quality seed potato (Solanum tubersum) through tissue culture

 

 

Objective :

To develop disease free potato that possess high yield capacity and good quality. The diseases free seed potato will be achieved by the use of modern technique such as tissue culture
To increase the duplication rate of potatoes so that in less generations sufficient seed can be produced
To develop the system of production of seed potato round the year in invitro condition
